<image:title>artist statement - “Nothing is fixed — each layer reveals the constant movement between memory, identity, and connection.”</image:title>
<image:caption>My work explores memory, identity, and connection through layered mixed media pieces made with ink and paper on canvas. I create each work by gluing and drawing on multiple layers of paper that form the foundation of the surface. Through sanding, tearing, and stripping back areas of the canvas, I reveal what lies beneath while connecting the layers through recurring line work that moves throughout the composition. The final pieces retain traces of every layer, holding both what has been concealed and what has been exposed over time. The process itself is central to the meaning of the work. Through layering, repetition, and deconstruction, I slowly build each surface. In some areas, the depth of the layers is fully exposed, revealing torn edges, buried marks, and fragments underneath, while in other areas the surface becomes smooth and unified, concealing the complexity below. This method reflects the way memory functions — some moments remain visible and accessible, while others become obscured, fragmented, or unexpectedly return over time. Through this practice, I explore how memory shapes identity. As an immigrant born in Colombia, I reflect on belonging, personal history, and the connections formed through shared experiences. The layered surfaces evoke the experience of carrying multiple histories, places, and identities at once while attempting to reconcile them into a cohesive whole. The work resonates through its universal connection to memory and identity. We all carry experiences that shape how we understand ourselves and others. My work invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and discover their own connections within the layers, textures, and marks embedded in the surface.</image:caption>
